ABOUT:
I had been going down to the beach near the pier in Hastings for a couple of nights running, finishing work and grabbing my camera and field recorder to go and see if I could get a nice long stretch of audio of the waves that didn’t have the usual wind-noise all over it. I spent a long time in the same place, sitting still, hardly breathing; all for fear of marring my perfect take. And... the mind starts to wander. The eye scans the horizon for the thousandth time, checking over the movement of the buoys upfront, and the big ships crossing somewhere out in the distance, and the fishing boats going off from the Stade to set out nets in the still water for the night.

Watching these slow, minimal, rhythmic motions, being alone and away from the road and the lights and bars and people in the town, my head started filling with sounds and ideas for music – some of it hallucinatory, some celebratory, some wistful, some fearful, some dangerous, violent, primal sounds, that would mix with the peace and otherworldliness of long melodies and layers of voices and instruments, all swooning and washing together like the water of the sea in a dream…

So, ‘Through This Sky’ is the result of that nocturnal evening, and a week spent afterwards trying to realise it in sound.

As for the field-recordings – I haven’t checked the tape yet…

In a town that’s gone,
Gone to you,
My Lord.

No shelter here,
No shelter.

Oh Lord,
All gone.

No shelter here,
No shelter.

Night has come,
The night has come,
The Knife has come,
Night has come,

Everywhere,
No shelter, no shelter.

Bound.
Here.

No shelter.
No shelter here.

For you,
For me.

Bound,
Bound,
Oh Lord.

I can’t see,
I can’t speak.

No shelter,
Lie to me.

The night has come,
The knife has come,

The knife is in your hand,
The knife is in my hand,
And the knife is in my hand,
The knife is in my hand.

Oh,
Bound,
Night has come,
The knife,
To you.
